Healing the Source, Not Just the Symptoms
Is Something Holding You Back from Running Free?

Sometimes life can feel like walking with a splinter in your foot.
You can still move forward. You adjust your stride, work around the discomfort and learn ways to cope. But when you want to run — to thrive, achieve, grow or simply feel more like yourself — that hidden splinter can continue to hold you back.
Root Cause Therapy (RCT) offers a gentle way to explore what may be beneath the patterns you are experiencing — unresolved experiences, emotions and beliefs that can influence how you think, feel and respond today.
Rather than simply focusing on the presenting issue, we explore what may be underneath it.
The aim is to help you release what is no longer serving you, develop greater understanding and move forward with more clarity, confidence and emotional freedom.
What Is Root Cause Therapy?
Root Cause Therapy is a trauma-informed process designed to help you explore the emotional roots of recurring thoughts, feelings, behaviours and patterns.
It works with both conscious awareness and subconscious beliefs, helping you explore past experiences that may still influence how you respond to situations today.
Rather than repeatedly talking about the problem, RCT uses a guided process to explore what may sit beneath your current experience — while keeping you conscious, aware and actively involved throughout the session.

Why Work at the Root?
Many of the beliefs and responses we carry into adulthood can be influenced by earlier experiences.
Sometimes we know exactly where a pattern began. At other times, we simply notice that the same feelings, reactions or situations seem to keep appearing.
RCT provides a structured way to explore those patterns and the experiences connected with them.
Instead of asking only:
“How do I manage this?”
we can also explore:
“Where might this have begun, and what do I need now?”
When Your Mind Is Trying to Protect You
Some of our patterns can develop as ways of helping us feel safe, soothed, accepted or in control.
Over time, responses that once helped us cope can become automatic. We may find ourselves avoiding certain situations, reaching for comfort, shutting down, overthinking, people-pleasing or repeating familiar habits — even when we consciously want to respond differently.
This is one reason change isn’t always as simple as having more willpower.
You can know what you want to change and genuinely intend to change it, while another, less conscious part of you continues to rely on a familiar response
because it has learned that response as a way of coping or protecting you.
Rather than judging the pattern or fighting against it, RCT invites us to become curious about it:
“What might this response have been trying to do for me?”
“What did I learn or believe at the time?”
“Do I still need to respond in the same way now?”
By bringing awareness, compassion and new understanding to those experiences and patterns, you can begin to develop different ways of relating to yourself and responding to life.
What lies beneath the pattern
We’re not just looking at the problem. We’re exploring what lies beneath it.
How Does Root Cause Therapy Work?
Each session is a guided, conscious process that helps you explore deeper beliefs, emotions and experiences in a supportive environment.
Sway testing
A gentle body-based technique used within RCT to explore subconscious beliefs and identify areas that may be useful to work with.
Guided exploration
You are guided through relevant memories and experiences with compassion and curiosity, rather than judgement.
Emotional and somatic processing
We pay attention to emotions and sensations that arise during the process, allowing space for them to be acknowledged and processed.
Integration
We bring together the insights and learning from the session and connect with your Future Self — supporting the beliefs, perspectives and choices you want to carry forward.
Throughout the process, you remain conscious, aware and in control. You can pause or stop at any time.
Who Is Root Cause Therapy For?
RCT may be helpful for people who feel that something keeps getting in the way despite understanding the problem intellectually or trying different ways to move forward.
People often explore RCT around areas such as:
- Workplace stress and burnout
- Confidence and self-belief
- Anxiety and emotional reactivity
- Leadership or performance blocks
- Repeating relationship or behavioural patterns
- Parenting stress and overwhelm
- Difficult emotions connected with past experiences
- Feeling stuck, lost or disconnected
- Limiting beliefs that affect personal or professional growth
You don’t need to know exactly where the problem began.
That is what we explore together.
A Trauma-Informed Approach
Root Cause Therapy was developed by Melissa Hiemann, Co-Founder of The Centre for Healing.
My approach combines my training in Root Cause Therapy with trauma-informed practice, meditation and an understanding of emotional wellbeing.
The work is collaborative rather than something being done to you. You set the pace, and your sense of safety, choice and autonomy remains central throughout the process.
Ready to Explore What’s Beneath the Surface?
Sometimes the thing holding us back isn’t a lack of motivation, willpower or knowledge.
There may simply be something deeper asking for attention.
If you’re curious about Root Cause Therapy and whether it might be right for you, you can begin with a conversation.
Root Cause Therapy is a complementary wellbeing modality and is not a substitute for medical, psychological or psychiatric diagnosis or treatment. If you are experiencing significant physical or mental health symptoms, please seek advice from an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.
